Trig Friday December 16, 2011
Excel Project - Completion You should continue to work on your Excel workbook until you have functioning worksheets that meet the project requirements. You can test your workbook using the handout provided in class that contains both the questions and the answers. You can download and submit another copy of the verification exercises Excel-PRJ-Verification.
  • Worksheet Triangles should be able to answers questions 1-6
  • Worksheet LawOfSines should be used when you have two sides and an angle across from one of the sides, or two angles and a side across from one of those sides - like questions 7-14
  • Worksheet LawOfCosines - should be used when you have two sides and an anlge that is not across from either of those sides - like questions 19-22 and the Hiker problem #18
  • The bonus worksheet should be able to solve a triangle given three sides - like questions 15-17

Trig Wednesday December 14, 2011
Computer Lab
Today in the lab you will be given a handout containing problems that you are to solve using the Excel spreadsheet that you created. You are not allowed to use the spreadsheet from another student and you must do your own work.
  • You are expected to complete the handout during 1/2 of lab time

  • If you did not complete your spreadsheet/workbook then use the workbook to complete as many questions as you can.

  • If you use a calculator then mark on your paper which problems you used a calculator

  • The lab time is not to be spent on other web sites, and all lab time must be spent on completing this sheet - not on completing your workbook.

  • The handout will be collected at the end of the period

  • The work that you turn in must reflect your own work effort.

Trig Weekend Update December 11, 2011
Notices
  • For help solving the navigation problem from Chapter 9 review the The Navigation Problem Presentation which is a PowerPoint show. You can try to view the presentation within a browser or download the file and open it using PowerPoint. The file contains both animations and audio. so for best results view the file as a show (press [F5] within PowerPoint).

  • The Excel project is due on Tuesday. Excel help is available after school in the STEM lab on Monday or Tuesday.

  • Edline grade reports have been generated, reflecting more accurate warm-up grades.

  • If you have missing grades, such as missing QuizBook! quiz grades, be sure to submit completion codes by the end of the week. Missing grades will be turned to zeros before the next time progress reports are published.

Trig Friday December 9, 2011
Computer Lab You have this computer lab time to work on your Trig Excel project, and only the Trig Excel Project.
    Important Notes
  • TriangleWorkbooks.doc contains the UPDATED project requirements from the one that was handed out in class last week. This updated version has a bonus sheet you can use for answering question like the ones from the Chapter 9 test you just took.
  • The project is due on Tuesday - you should turn it in by e-mailing it to: BrennanJ@HWSchools.net
  • If you need extra help, plan on staying after school on Monday. You can e-mail BrennanJ@HWSchools.net with questions.
  • The work you submit should reflect your work effort and your understanding.
  • Wednesday you will be given 30 minutes to complete a list of problems using only your workbook, no calculators will be allowed.
  • Use the practice sheet provided in class today to help you develop your spreadsheets and to define what each spreadsheet should be able to do.
  • You MAY add more functionality to each sheet - so that you could answer the practice problems by using only one worksheet in your workbook.
  • Help can be available of you would like to add some controls (like a clear button, or calculate button,or other macros)
  • Not that the Excel Trig functions use radian, and most of the problems we have done lately are using degrees, you will have to convert to/from radians/degrees either using builtin functions or using pi/180 ratios.
  • Functions that will help you out: round, min, max, sin, cos, asin, tan, atan, asin, acos, radian, degree
  • Keep notes about what functions and formulas you use to solve problems - it will help you when you have apply similar steps to new problems.

Announcements
  • The Trig Reference Sheet for Chapter 9 will be posted during the Chapter 9 test. Be sure to know what it means to "solve a triangle" and to manipulate the formulas for finding unknown values.

  • Chapter 9 Section 4 homework was due on Friday. Those who did not complete the assingment or were confused by the due date should still complete the assignment because it will be on the test which is on Tuesday December 6. After completing the assignment check your answers using the Key (pdf) .

  • Be sure to complete the chapter test before class on Monday, we will review the answers in class.
Homework answers will be available in PDF form after class on Monday.

  • Complete and turn in the homework that is due on Tuesday - it will help you prepare for the test.

  • Progress reports/Quarter 2 grades will be published on Wednesday after school. The report will be published on Edline by the administration and will include grades for all classes. If you have Trig-codes that you have earned from QuizBook! activities be sure to turn them in before Wedneday if you would like credit for them.

  • QuizBook! activites have been changed so that you will not have to restart at 0 in order to receive a completion code. [This does mean that I need to change the name of the activity from Winning Streak to something better, so if you have suggestion please pass them in.

  • Review the homework problems for a better idea as to the type of problems that your Excel Spreadsheet should be able to solve as part of your project. Next Monday you will receive a list of problems that you must solve (and be able to solve) using your spreadsheet.

Excel Lab

READ ALL Instructions

For this computer lab you will create an Excel workbook that contains spreadsheets to solve triangles. When you create a new workbook Excel will create three worksheets. You can switch between the worksheets using the tabs at the bottom left hand corner.
  • Start Excel
  • Enable macros (you will use them later)
  • To rename a worksheet, right click on the tab at the bottom.
    1. Rename “Sheet1” to “Trianlges”
    2. Rename “Sheet2” to “LawOfSines”
    3. Rename “Sheet3” to “LawOfCosines”

Notes:
  • To enter text in a cell on a spreadsheet, usually you can just type it in. Sometime you have to (or want to) to start with a single quote character – that will tell Excel it is just a character string.

  • To enter a formula for a calculation, begin by entering an equal sign.

  • In the Triangles worksheet create an area that will solve for the third side of a right triangle

  • In cell d8 enter =(D5^2+D6^2)^(1/2)

  • Create and test the rest of the worksheet to solve triangles

Part 1

Write down the problems that you model and solve for each of the following exercises:
Use the Trianlge Solver Application on NLVM
  • Select an angle, solve using the definition of Sine

  • Select an angle, solve using the definition of cosine

  • Select an angle, solve using the Law of Sines

  • Select an angle, solve using the definition of Tangent

Repeat the above list with new problems (turn in a total of 10 problems that YOU solved.

Part 2

Search online for the exact location of your house in terms of Latitude and Longitude.

BE PRECISE to the degres, minute, and second. Write this down.

Homework Solutions The homework was handed out in class. The solutions are posted here in two formats. Check your answers using either file.
  1. Trig-8-13-Key - Single Page web file
  2. Trig-8-13-Key - MS Word document

Practice Test The homework grades for the Chapter 8 assignment were as follows:
Very good - ONE

pretty good - a couple, maybe a couple of more with some coaching on solving equations - the step where there but they were a bit off - the warm-up exercises on Friday will clear up things for these people.

not good - many - the strategy of copying the answers for the odd numbered problems out of the back of the book and filling in the answers to even problems with junk, is not a good strategy and does not demonstrate understanding.

Review the problems again - the answers in the back of the book should confirm that you are doing things right, and that you should use a similar strategy for the even problems. If you are not getting the problems right, then look at the answers and draw pictures. SHOW YOUR WORK. You will see these problems again soon, so get them right.
